Silicon Valley senior centers offer activities, fitness and exercise

Senior centers can be a wealth of opportunity for the fitness-minded. Typically they offer a variety of workout and exercise programs at all levels. Don't be too quick to dismiss them as "places for really old people."

Yes, there are activities for active-minded people in their 70's, 80's and 90's, but there are also a lot of low cost options for people in their 50's and 60's too. And face it, sometimes it's nice to know that a class instructor has been trained to work with "the slightly older body."

Here's a list (send in more if you have them) of centers, most of which have programs for residents and non-residents of that city.

Typically the programs are available to people ages 50+:

Bolt gets piece of Berlin Wall - and of our hearts

The Yahoo! Sports headline reads, Bolt gets piece of Berlin Wall.

Yes, Usain Bolt not only shattered his own world record in the 100 and 200 meters at the World Athletic Championships in Berlin last week - but he captured the imagination of people around the world. To congratulate him, the city of Berlin gave him a giant piece of the original Berlin Wall.

The 12 foot section of the once-insurmountable Berlin Wall will be delivered to Bolt's training camp in Jamaica.

Of course the beauty and speed of Bolt's feat is about the awesome athletics involved.

But it is also about the inspiration to all people. As I wrote in Examiner.com, when we watch these athletes accomplish remarkable goals it a reminder to all of us that we can get out there and do it - whether our goal is to climb a mountain or climb a flight of stairs.

Perseid Meteor Shower brings opportunity for special focus on fitness and exercise

Tuesday, August 11th, 2009
It's August - which means the spectacular "Tears of St. Lawrence" (officially known as the Perseid Meteor Shower) - is here. Peak viewing is Tuesday and Wednesday nights (early morning viewing on the 12th and 13th) - Midnight to 5 a.m.

Here in San Jose, there are two nights of viewing. In the Rose Garden and other inner city areas there is too much light, but there are ample hills around the area where you can get away from the glare of city lights - even if you want to take care since it IS the middle of the night.
